Broadening your skillset

Banner skillset guide for the aspiring sky pirate

Before you begin…

Any aspiring Sky Pirate can pick up a lot of skills, be them Magicks or Technicks, along the way, but a true Sky Pirate will try to find them all! Of course, you will not get a lot of pirating done if you are constantly looking at a map where X marks all the treasures that hold Magick or Technick scrolls for you to plunder, so this guide is here to steer you in the right direction – even if for the time being you’re a Sky Pirate without a Sky.

The scrolls will be easy to find, in that – with exception of notable exceptions which shall be addressed in the list below – treasures will hold your scroll with 100% certainty until you’ve managed to locate and take them for yourself. You don’t need your Diamond Armlet to search the deep recesses of those treasures to find your sought-after scrolls. That said, it is impossible to miss any of the scrolls. Even if you’ve long since liberated princesses from their Sky Fortress Gaol, or raided a Laboratory chasing another Sky Pirate with Daddy Issues, you’re still likely to find the scrolls you may have missed there in other places around Ivalice – just much later.

Skillsearching

This guide takes into account the earliest point in the journey that you should – theoretically – be able to access the treasure with your precious loot. There’s just one rule you need to take into account, and that is: talk to everyone, open every chest or treasure pot. Leave no stone unturned. It is rather hard to miss anything in your journey through Golden Age Ivalice, so you’re likely to find all the scrolls you need to fill up your Sky Pirate’s Den with the corresponding trophies, if you make a habit out of this.

What this guide does not take into account are the scrolls you can buy at any given Magick/Technick shop. Though buying things does not lie in the true nature of a Sky Pirate, these scrolls are readily available to you, and all you have to do is travel around Ivalice at any given time – preferably just before or after a dramatic climax in your journey – to pick them up. There’s nothing more to it!

Master of all –

Below is the list of all the scrolls you can find on your journey through Ivalice, organised in a chronological order. Remember, just open all treasure chests or jars. You’re a Pirate, no one’s going to stop you!

Unless maybe a Mimic.

Tomb of RaithwallDISPEL / SHADES OF BLACK / VANISH

Now, you’ve raided Raithwall’s Tomb and gotten your first Esper. There are some things you are free to do now. You could go straight to Jahara to meet with the Garif and end up with a sassy child following you around, but – technically – a few more scrolls could be got at this point. Even earlier in one case, but you would have your Pirate arse handed over to you by the monsters guarding them.

First of all, at this point, catch up on your Clan Hunts. Particularly the Flowering Cactoid and the White Mousse hunt. Your Clan Primer will tell you where to go; you really don’t need to ask for directions here. When both Hunts are completed, you’ll get some rewards. The Flowering Cactoid leaves behind a Cactoid Flower, and the White Mousse, as Hurdy is loath to admit, took a key along with it that you will retrieve after killing it. Talk to Dantro to listen to his tale, and to Hurdy to have the key fixed.

The key will give you access to all of the areas in the Garamsythe Waterway if flicking switches and draining sewage is your thing, and Dantro… Well, that story is a little longer, but as mentioned before: talk to everyone and leave no stone unturned. If you follow Dantro’s requests1, you’ll end up with a key to re-enter the Barheim Passage, and that’s where two more scrolls are hidden that you couldn’t reach when you were first there.

The monsters in these two areas, however, will probably be a bit too strong at this point in your journey to actually go and retrieve these scrolls, but knowing they are available is something, at least2.

Here, things become a bit more complicated. If you’re the adventurous kind of Sky Pirate3, you may end up bumping into a quite annoying Bomb King. This Bomb bars the way to the Necrohol of Nabudis. Like many locations, you could always come back later on to visit these locations – and seeing that the Baknamy in there are particularly vicious, and we’re not even discussing the walking furnaces and embodiments of death that live there, or that adorable little killer bunny, we would strongly suggest you do just that – but technically, you are able to start all the adventures in the merry little Necrohol at this very point.

Once you leave the Salika Woods, however, you can have the Moogles fix all sorts of things all over Ivalice, and in doing so, you will have opened the path to the Nabreus Deadlands and also to several more locations which yield those precious skill scrolls, all listed below. The Necrohol of Nabudis in particular hides some interesting scrolls which are well worth seeking out.

Another notable matter we must address, which could otherwise be overlooked, is that – if you have adhered to the mantra of leave no stone unturned – you must have overheard certain Bhujerbans mention that things which fall down from the floating city, have a way of turning up unscathed.

Well, they have a habit of turning up at Phon Coast, as it is near to where Bhujerba commands the skies. So, too, a key that has apparently been lost and opens up another area of the Lhusu Mines. Just consider this a useful tip from one Sky Pirate to another. Because opening up new areas of course means gaining access to more scrolls!

You may also inadvertently summon a certain collector of fine weapons from the Rift. Just keep an eye out on the Hunt Boards for that one.

Chocobos get you anywhere, even in places you couldn’t otherwise access. It has been hinted at as early as in Jahara, and here, in Tchita, you can make proper use of it. Chocobos can get you over debris and into the Cerobi Steppe to fight windmills and find scrolls before your journey takes you there. Though some scrolls may be a bit more elusive than what you’re used to.

Be a proper Sky Pirate: cross boundaries!

And finally…

Now that you have successfully razed an ancient monument to the ground, nothing can stop you. Truly, nothing. At this point, probably not even Vayne Solidor in all his might and glory. You have a working Airship now, and you can fly all over Ivalice. Now is the time to look for the remaining scrolls to complete your collection of skills. And it is recommended that you do, because these are some magnificent skills to own. But it’s not going to be easy.

First of all, you’re going to have to turn on all the lights in the subterrane of the Pharos to collect WITHER.

Then, you can go back to Giruvegan and get lost in the Great Crystal to – hopefully – find SHELLGA and HASTEGA.

But the most challenging and entertaining journey to make is the one to find the final Esper Zodiark. Once you have collected 10 Espers and head back to Jahara, you’ll be given a key – at least if you’ve remembered the mantra leave no stone unturned – that unlocks the rest of the Henne Mines. All the way in the deepest recesses of the mines hides an Esper said to be feared by the gods themselves, but also… ADDLE and RENEW. And some bottles of wine, we’ve been told.

Venturous vendors

Leaves only one thing to be covered in this guide. Having followed this, you may have noticed you still haven’t gotten the Runeweaver trophy to show off your magnificent collection of Magicks, despite holding the title of Jack-of-all-Trades for learning all Technicks. That is because you haven’t collected all Magicks yet.

Though the most common Shops have yielded all the skills they could offer, there are several unconventional shops which hold scrolls for you to claim as your own. Remember Burrogh? … Probably not. He hasn’t moved from his spot all the way at the beginning of the Barheim Passage, though… And did you know that some Baknamy in the Necrohol of Nabudis are more venturous than their fellow goblins?

SHOPS
Clan Provisionerholds all the Green Magicks. Raise your Clan Rank to unlock them all.
Burrogh (Barheim Passage)SCOURGE
“???” (Necrohol of Nabudis)ESUNAGA

The Baknamy is a little hard to find, especially since the little goblin is well hidden until you reach the entrance of the Pharos at Ridorana, so a picture of its hiding place may help you locate him4. Or you can just try shouting into every corner you can find in the ruins of the palace. Whatever floats your Airship.

Burrogh only lets you have his Scourge scroll after you’ve acquired the Treaty Blade, so don’t bother searching him out before then.

congratulations

If you have followed this guide to this point, right now your Sky Pirate’s Den should be basking in the evanescence of the crystal that is the Runeweaver Trophy. Well done! You’re one step closer to becoming an established Sky Pirate without having had to ask for directions!

Footnotes

1 More on this in our aspiring Sky Pirate’s guide to being sidetracked

2 Our Sky Pirates have only managed to kill the White Mousse after having reached the Paramina Rift, to give you an idea. The bombs in the new areas of the Barheim Passage were still giving them a hard time at that point. We do not recommend going in on a whim. A dead Sky Pirate can’t plunder.

3 Which we sincerely hope you are, otherwise why did you even choose Sky Pirate as your calling?
