Ultima – part II

The end

As I saw everything fade before me, and I myself slipped into a limbo of waking dream, the owner of the hand that had grabbed me shouted her head off in a familiar sounding voice. Carmen? Was it really — ?

There was no time to ponder on the conundrum which resulted in Carmen being deep within the belly of this other realm. I had no life in me to ponder on said conundrum, even. I just resigned to the thought that I had been right all along and Carmen had come to the Orbonne Monastery to study the surroundings while we spent our time chasing a senile Wizard around in a pitch dark dungeon.

This was not far off what had truly transpired, I learned later when Carmen told me to hold my breath and suddenly we were surrounded by fish – and crabs. Not the ones that I prefer on my dinner plate, but dinner was far enough from my mind. We were free!

Escape route

It turned out that Carmen had discovered the same connection between the realm which the High Seraph occupied and what we had learned from both Mustadio and Agrias, and had deduced that we were most likely underneath the ocean floor. And sure enough, when we broke onto the surface, there it was: the salty marine winds, the island of Mullonde to our one side and the bustling port of Goug on the other! But what about the others? Did they make it?

I could only hope that somehow Luso and Balthier, who had been running through Ultima’s realm in tandem, had either found that illustrious cache of Glabados, or had been whisked away to who knows where – or when – by that strange Grimoire of Luso’s. But the others… Ramza, Alma, Mustadio, Agrias, Rapha, Meliadoul, Orlandeau… What would become of them?

As I write this, several years have passed since the defeat of the High Seraph. Ivalice is relatively safe – Carmen and I make sure of that. I have seen Orran several times since, and he insists he has seen Ramza and Alma. All those years travelling Ivalice, and I have yet to see them, any of them. I’m not sure if Orran is of clear wit, or whether he clings on to a fleeting mirage in the hope to ever find his father again. I think it is pointless. They’re all gone, and we’re the ones left to tell their story. So tell their story we shall!

I am Bathsua, protector of Ivalice, and these were my memoirs.

Meanwhile, elsewhere…

Bathsua spent the rest of her life protecting Ivalice from any threat, but never had she met – now King – Delita again since their brief encounters during their quest to defeat the Lucavi. She kept following his actions from a distance, something she was unable to do with the other heroes.

Balthier has likely returned to his own era, or perhaps he has become a time bandit rather than a sky pirate – who is to say? Or he might have teamed up with Luso, used the Grimoire to teleport them far away and started a poaching business.

Of Ramza and Alma, we know that they escaped to another country, far from the realm of Ivalice. We have it on good authority – not just Orran. But what of the others? To be fair, it’s hard to track down Rapha, or Meliadoul. With all the dancing she’s done, maybe Rapha got flung far into the past and started a cult under the assumed name of Müllenkamp. And perhaps Meliadoul remained in the realm, having forgone all hope when also her father had disappeared entirely.

What we could deduce is that, in all likelihood, Agrias, Mustadio and Orlandeau have been flung into different dimensions:

MacGyver does look a lot like Mustadio, doesn't he?

Word is that Mustadio got flung into the United States in the 1980’s. He doesn’t remember a thing of what happened or how he got there, but he does remember how to create things. Of his name, he only remembered it starts with an M.

He now makes a fair living doing odd jobs for some illustrious corporate boss, but it might be a cover for a secret organisation. He associates guns with the traumatic experiences in Ivalice, even though he remembers none of it, so he detests firearms of any sort.

Agrias, however, got flung into midieval England, found a sword sticking out from a stone that looked remarkably like the Excalibur she wielded until the very end in Ivalice. So she took it, not realizing that in doing so, she had inadvertently been crowned king of the realm.

She now spends the rest of eternity in the pantheon of Heroic Spirits as the King of Knights, to be called upon as a Saber class servant in Holy Grail wars. Word is she doesn’t mind, and actually enjoys still being able to fight from time to time. But for the love of — why does everyone keep confusing her with some girl named Jeanne?!

Meanwhile, in a galaxy far away, Orlandeau has settled in a certain desert recluse, having assumed the name of a mentor who had died long ago, but no one seemed to have noticed the place switching. He now spends his days learning about this Jedi-teaching, and he feels it is rather similar to what he used to do in Ivalice.

Unlike Mustadio, he does remember what happened, but prefers to forget all about it and pretend he is a Jedi Master – and getting away with it rather easily, too!

(The above is obviously not canonical – but interesting to consider all the same)
