Shopping spree

On the economy of Ivalice

There is some worrisome news that I must share. We all fear Ramza may have a shopping addiction. That being said, probably more worrisome is why all these goblins seem to have their pockets lined with Gil. Where do they get it from? Who do they rob? Is it even right to hold on to it, in the knowledge that it may have belonged to a merchant neighbour from Gariland, or a travelling nobleman from Eagrose?

Truth be told, we squires don’t get paid much, so the Gil we retrieve from every battle is great to have. We often need new weapons and armour, and as long as we don’t kick the habit of throwing stones at one another while one of us chases the last remaining goblin – with or without an ominous cackle, it really depends on who gives chase – we are in perpetual need of potions and hi-potions alike.

Luckily, those are things that the Outfitters always retain, though there may be a difference in Outfitters depending on the city with regards to weapons. For example in Gariland, my hometown and a city known for magic, Outfitters carry staves and rods, among some other basic equipment. A capital city such as Eagrose offers a wider variety of weaponry and armour. I hear there are some cities which have Outfitters specialised in something called guns. I must admit, I’ve never heard of it, but I can imagine that these cities are overrun with travellers seeking novelty outfitting.

Let us hope there are not too many goblins along the way to those cities. That Gil they steal is better spent on the economy of Ivalice.

The trouble with having to travel to find fitting weapons and armour is that it takes a while before everyone is equipped, so we’ve decided to sell whatever we don’t need, but keep at least one of each until a better version can be found at the Outfitters. Ramza, who recently found a new hobby in archery, went without any bows for the longest of times. So we stopped at every Outfitter along the way to Eagrose, looking through his wares, fitting whatever we could and taking potions along with us.

Thousands of Gil was thrown about and eventually, Ramza only found a decent bow at Eagrose Castle, where we were all reprimanded by his big brother, Lord Dycedarg, for our inability to obey the order of guarding the castle walls. But it turns out we’re allowed to go and assist in bringing down the Corpse Brigade once and for all after all!

I am Bathsua, the runaway wall guardian, and these are my memoirs.
